Kitchen Cabinet Guide
San Antonio kitchen remodeling can be quite the undertaking. When it comes to deciding on kitchen cabinets, there are many things to consider, including:
- Available Space
- Type and Material
- Budget
Space Considerations
Before making any other decisions, you will need to know how much space you have available for your cabinetry. Standard cabinets include a base of 24”x36”, not including a 4” riser. Upper cabinets generally have a depth of 12 inches. Cabinets meant to be used as pantry storage are usually 83.5” tall.
If your kitchen space varies from these measurements, you will most likely need to explore your options for specialty or customized cabinets.
Types and Materials
Cabinets generally fall within 4 categories when it comes to type. These include stock cabinets, ready-to-assemble (RTA), semi-custom, and custom.
Stock cabinets come pre-sized and are mass-produced. They cannot be altered, which can be a challenge when working with kitchen remodels. It is important to ensure your measurements are accurate before ordering stock cabinets.
RTA cabinets are made with cost in mind. They come boxed from the manufacturer and must be assembled. They are a great option for anyone on a budget who is well versed in building and installing cabinets.
Semi-custom offer a wider variety of style and size options. Semi-customs are standard in size, but offer the option of increased depth. They also have more choice when it comes to style and personalization.
Custom cabinets are completely unique and tailored to your specifications. They are higher-end in both cost and material, but boast almost limitless options when it comes to material and design.
Budget
If you're looking for the most economical choice, RTA or stock cabinets are the way to go. If cost is less of a concern, then semi-custom or custom cabinets are an option. Remember, the kitchen is the heart of the home. Whatever design choices you make will set the tone for your household for years to come.
